Beira is one of the major port city in Mozambique, with the collonial culture legacy. Alluvial geography formed mostly flat topography in Beira. Historicaly, those flooded plain were argricultural use. Urban expansion into the agricultural land (lowland), sprawl brought problems “Flooding” as a consequence of unplanned sprawl. On March 15, 2019, cyclone Idai hit Beira severely and most of the lowland were under flood and 60% of the houses were damaged. Based on that, settlements extended into the low-lying machambas highlights the importance of planning for future growth of the city.
The city of Beira has a strong system localized of urban agriculture that is currently under threat. Our project understands agriculture as a flood infrastructure. This nature based and resilient agricultural network could coordinate the communities, organize the city, and be the key to recovery.
Story Map Series
As part of my work, I built the story map of this Water Urbanism Studio. These story maps delineate the connection of the Great Valley, Beira, Tel Aviv, and Addis Ababa. Also include the projects from the whole studio and our process.
